ProVida Flax Seed Oil is a 100% natural supplement containing 60% Omega 3, an Essential Fatty Acid known to possess anti-inflammatory properties that has many health benefits. The oil is also a great fat source of cool energy, ideal for endurance and working horses.
With 60% Omega 3, 15% Omega 6 and 15% Omega 9, Flax Seed Oil is a wonderful natural health supplement that horses love! Providing fantastic levels of these Essential Fatty Acids has a wide range of health benefits, and can assist with many aspects of overall health.
Flax Seed Oil can improve the health of the coat, skin, bones, joints, hooves and heart as well as the digestive, circulatory and immune systems. What's more the coat can vastly improve in feel, health and shine.
In addition to this, Flax Seed Oil is a wonderful source of cool energy as it is 100% fat. This makes it a fantastic option for endurance and racing horses, as not only is energy provided, but the high levels of Omega 3 help with the breakdown of lactic acid after exercise and can help to prevent tying up as well as protecting the joints and hooves. No other oil can perform all of these functions as effectively.
Our Flax Seed Oil is available in a range of sizes from 1 Litre to 20 Litre, and we recommend you order a maximum of 3 months supply based on the recommended feeding rates above to ensure freshness of the oil.
Delivery is included in the cost of the product and takes 2-5 working days (RD addresses can incur further delays). If delivery is to an RD address, please select this option when ordering. This will incur an extra $5 charge.
For general health and maintenance, we recommend a daily feeding rate of 20-30ml per day for a miniature horse, 40ml per day for a pony, foal or yearling, and 50-70ml per day for an adult horse. This will provide enough nutrition for general maintenance of skin, coat, joints, hooves and overall condition, but can be increased if desired results are not seen over time.
If you wish to use the Oil as an energy source for racehorses and endurance events, then 140-200ml can be fed daily, particularly in the lead up to events.
Store the oil in a cool, dark place away from sunlight, ideally a tack shed or garage. For more information view our Feeding & Storage Guide.
Q: Is Flax Seed Oil similar to Linseed Oil?
A: Yes, both Flax Seed Oil and Linseed Oil come from the linseed seed, it is just a difference in terminology…. Linseed Oil is the name given to industrial grade oil (the kind you find in hardware stores to stain wood) and Flax Seed Oil is the term used for food grade oil. Our oils meet food grade standards, hence it is termed Flax Seed Oil.
Q: What is unique about ProVida Flax Seed Oil?
A: The Canterbury Plains are offers optimal growing conditions for high quality raw material. We are proud to be based in Mid-Canterbury at the arable heart of New Zealand. Our flax seed products are all cold-pressed in small batches using the highest quality seed grown for us by local contracted farmers in our region. All flax seed products we offer are traceable back to their origin, and produced to human food grade standards using no chemicals, solvents or heat in the extraction process.
Q: There are so many oils available, how do I know which one to choose?
A: There certainly are so many to choose from! In a nutshell, Flax Seed Oil is THE best oil for it's Omega 3 content. No other oil delivers the level of Omega 3 per feed like Flax Seed Oil. The Omega 3 content is typically 60% and this is by far higher than fish oil and any other vegetable oil. By comparison, the Omega 3 level of Canola Oil is 11%; Rice Bran Oil is 1% and Soy Bean Oil is 8%.
Q: Can Flax Seed Oil be digested horses?
A: Yes it absolutely can… Horses are fantastic users of fat in their diets, and are extremely good at coping with high amounts of fat as an energy source. What cannot be digested well is the raw whole linseed seed, however when the seeds have been pressed, the oil is left…this is 100% fat, 60% of which is Omega 3, one of the Essential Fatty Acids needed by the body.
Q: I currently feed Hemp Seed Oil to my horse, what is the difference between Hemp Seed Oil and Flax Seed Oil?
A: Hemp Seed Oil provides high levels of Omega 6, some of which can be pro-inflammatory if fed in large quantities. Flax Seed Oil provides around 60% Omega 3, which is well documented to have anti-inflammatory properties. All animals require a healthy balance of both of these essential fatty acids, therefore Omega 3 rich Flax Seed Oil is very good in helping to maintain this balance.
